Philanthropy

Every year the Beta Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta participates in a variety of community service and fundraising events including Adopt a School, Race for the Cure, Hill Clean-up, BuffBowl, and Theta Ole among others. We are proud to be active in our Greek community as well as in a variety of other activities on campus and in the local community.

Our national philanthropy is CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA was begun in 1990 by a Seattle judge concerned over making decisions about abused and neglected children's lives without sufficient information. He conceived the idea of using trained community volunteers to speak for the best interests of these children in court. This Seattle program was so successful that soon judges across the country began utilizing citizen advocates. In 1990, the U.S. Congress encouraged the expansion of CASA with passage of the Victims of Child Abuse Act. Today more than 900 CASA programs are in operation, with 70,000 women and men serving as CASA volunteers.

We organize two annual events to raise money for CASA, BuffBowl and Theta Ole. BuffBowl is a fraternity football tournament that is held in the fall at local football fields. It is one of the most popular philanthropy activities, generally every fraternity participates. We raise money through the teams that play as well as sponsors such as local businesses and alumnae. Each fraternity's team is assigned a group of Theta "coaches" who go to their practices and cheer them on at games. Almost the entire chapter gets involved during the days of the tournament.

We hold Theta Ole in the spring. It is a Mexican dinner held at our house. We decorate our dining area for the event and have a number of seatings for dinner. The tickets are $5.00 each and all proceeds go towards the local CASA. Everyone is welcome, in the past we have had a great turnout from parents, alumni and friends as well as members of other Greek houses on campus. We are looking forward to this year's Theta Ole and hope to surpass the amount we raised last year.
